Is the UMC Divided?
The United Methodist Church is sadly a divided and hurting Church. Even after votes, conferences, and proposals, it’s unable to find unity and faithfully follow the current Book of Discipline. However, this is a moment requiring great conviction and a possible moment for a great revival.
Divided on the Bible
Whether influenced by postmodernism, emotionalism, or potentially harmful interpretive frameworks, the United Methodist Church is divided on matters of Scriptural authority. However, there's excitement about where future unity on this crucial issue will lead to church planting and reaching the nations for God's glory.
Divided on Human Sexuality
While human sexuality may be the presenting issue for many, it's one that we can't disconnect from our differing views of the Bible and theology. All persons are of sacred worth, but homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching through God's design. As we attempt to hold this view faithfully, we're called to be people of truth, grace, and love in our witness.
Divided on Mission
Due to differences in our understanding of the gospel's power to restore both body and soul, we find ourselves seeing differences in our churches, our discipleship, and our mission. This divide is yet another indicator that we're not better together.
